Swimrun Pull Buoy Setup: The Simple Mount

The Simple Mount

There are many ways to set up your pull buoy situation in Swimrun. In this video, we discuss the Simple Mount pull buoy setup. Why we like it, how to make it, and how to use it.

Why we like it

Chris has been using this mount since 2020 and likes how reliable it has been and how straightforward it is to deal with during Swimrun transitions. He likes it so much that Chipper has decided to move on from his Lasso mount setup and try the simple mount.

How to make it

As the name implies, the simple mount couldn’t be any simpler. One paradors rope, one pull buoy, one whole in said pull buoy, and a knot. That’s it.

DIY Simple Mount

Materials list:

Pull Buoy: We both use, recommend, and love the Ark Sports Keel and Keel + pull buoys

Shock Cord: We use ¼ inch/ 6mm thick shock bungee style cord. There are many color and length options to chose from.

Screwdriver/ long poking device

Sharp scissors

Lighter

Straw (optional)

Step by Step Guide:

Step 1: Have pull buoy

Step 2: Take your screwdriver and poke a hole through the buoy somewhere between ⅓ to ½ the ways down the pull buoy.

Step 3: If using the straw then trim to the width of the pull buoy so no excess is exposed. Thread shock cord through the straw then both of those though the hole you made with your screwdriver/ long poking device.

Step 4: Tie a lose knot with the two loose ends of the shock cord. Adjust the fit and tension of the mount to your preference. Then seed the knot and pull hard on all ends.

Step 5: Safely use a lighter to tidy up the ends but lighting on fire until stray fibers are singed and melted. Repeat on the other end and blow out the flame.

How to use it

Using it also lives up to the name. With the loop around your waist, you keep the pull buoy on your lower back during the runs and you only move it when you are transitioning into the water. Coming out of the water you would reverse what you did going in. PRO TIP: as you transition to run, release the pull buoy from between your thighs and organize it within the loop when it is in front of you and then slide it to your back. That is easier than trying to pack it away when it’s behind you.
