Coach Joe Friel
Welcome to episode 115 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast!
This week’s episode is one for the books! Friend of the pod, Bill Lankford (from Team Mr. and Mrs. B,) suggested that we do an episode helping “older” folks get into endurance events and Swimrunning in particular. We couldn’t think of a better person to ask to come on the show than the legendary endurance Coach Joe Friel. This is a seriously great conversation and we’re blessed to have Coach Friel on the show!
But first...
Training Update
Swimrun Lake James is 5 weeks away! Chipper will be rust busting this weekend in Catalina while Chris will be just trying to not bust during the LA Marathon.
Shoutouts
This week we’re shouting out our newest Patron on Patreon, Brooke Fallon. Thank you for supporting our podcast journey! Stay Fearless!
Feats of Endurance
This week’s winner is Leung from Indonesia. Posted a ride over the weekend and it’s just so cool that we have folks in our Strava Club living in Indonesia.

This Week in Swimrun
Welcome to the LTBz news desk.
Down under in Australia, The 26km Trans Cape Swimrun took place this past weekend. So great to see this event grow the last few years as well as seeing more Australians getting into the sport of Swimrun.
In case you’re looking for a cool race plan in a few weeks…Hero Swimrun is going down on March 26th in Rio de Janeiro. If you can get there, go! (Programming alert, Fabio Iskandarian of Hero Swimrun will be joining us at the news desk in a few weeks for our special/random segment, Race Director Reports.)
Finally, our friends at Wild Swimrun announced the date for this year’s Utö Swimrun Camp. This year’s camp will be on the weekend of May 14th. Make sure you follow them on Instagram for more details about the camp or sign up at raceid.com.
Shameless plug time: we are raising money to help fund scholarships for women and girls to be able to participate in Wild Swimrun through their Wild Youth Initiative. We’ve already funded two scholarships but we would like to keep it going. If you’re interested in contributing to that, just go to our website and scroll to the bottom of the homepage or click the link in the show notes.
That is it for this week. Feel free to reach out and let us know if there’s anything that you’d like for us to mention on the show.

We gots discount codes!
The awesome folks at Precision Fuel and Hydration have set up the discount code LOWTIDE22 that’s good for 15% off of your first order. Trust us, try out their hydration powder and gels.
Our friends at Ödyssey Swimrun gave us the code “LOWTIDEBOYZ” that is good for 15% off of your registration for any and all of their 2022 events. Hope to see you all at their first race of the season this July in Casco Bay Maine.
Legendary Coach Joe Friel
It was a very Wayne’s World moment to interview Coach Joe Friel. That moment was made even more so by how welcoming he was and how generous he was with his time. In this conversation, we focused on the topic of training for older adults and peppered him with listener questions. Despite Chris almost ruining the interview at the end, this interview was a lot of fun and somehow raised our already ridiculously high opinion of Coach Friel. Get your notepads out for this one!
